Bhubaneswar: The three-day 16th Odisha Environment Congress, held at Rama Devi Women’s University, Bhubaneswar, concluded on Monday.
During the congress, 13 resolutions were adopted, which will be submitted to the State government at a later stage. These resolutions primarily emphasise the role of women in the protection of nature and the environment, and highlight how women can actively participate in decision-making processes related to environmental governance. It was also announced that the 17th Odisha Environment Congress will be held at NIT Rourkela, with the theme “Environment and Technical Knowledge”. In addition, a proposal was approved to organise the All India Environment Congress next year.
Addressing the valedictory ceremony as the chief guest, former Chief Secretary of Odisha Pradeep Jena said that environmental protection becomes difficult without proper co-ordination between government policies and the general public.
Speaking as the chief speaker at the special session titled “Role of Industry in Growth and Sustainable Development”, Principal Secretary of the Industries Department Hemant Sharma said that while growth is essential in the present time, environmental protection is equally important. He stressed the need for deep deliberation on how industrial development and economic prosperity can progress while safeguarding nature.
At the valedictory function, the Vice-Chancellor of Ramadevi Women’s University, Professor Chandi Charan Rath, presided over the proceedings. Distinguished participants included Arvind Behera, Dr. Bijaya Mishra, India’s Consul General posted in New Zealand Madan Mohan Sethi, Dr. Jayakrishna Panigrahi, Professor Sarat Kumar Palit, and Professor Sucheta Priyabadini.
