New Delhi: The Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR has arrived at Phuket, marking the second port call of its ongoing deployment in the Indian Ocean Region. The vessel completed a six-day transit from Malé.

IOS SAGAR, also known as INS Sunayna, is operating with a multinational crew drawn from 16 friendly foreign countries. The deployment aims to advance the MAHASAGAR vision – Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. The mission, which began in March 2026, also reflects India’s leadership as Chair of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium.

During its stay in Phuket, the ship is scheduled to hold professional interactions with the Royal Thai Navy. These engagements aim to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation and improve mutual understanding. Social, cultural, and sporting activities are also planned to enhance camaraderie and people-to-people ties, according to an official statement.

The port visit coincides with Songkran, offering an opportunity to promote cultural exchange among participating navies.

During the transit from Malé, the crew conducted structured training exercises at sea. These included seamanship operations and operational drills to improve readiness, interoperability, and maritime coordination among participating nations.

The deployment highlights the Indian Navy’s continued focus on building maritime partnerships and strengthening regional capacity. It also supports efforts to maintain security and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.

IOS SAGAR was flagged off from Mumbai on April 2, 2026, by Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth. As part of the mission, the ship will visit several ports, including Malé, Phuket, Jakarta, Singapore, Yangon, Chittagong, and Colombo.

The initiative follows the vision of ‘One Ocean, One Mission’, aimed at strengthening cooperation among maritime partners.
