CM Majhi suspends four officials over textbook errors

Bhubaneswar: Following a massive uproar over major errors found in school textbooks, the committee constituted under the chairmanship of the Development Commissioner has submitted its report to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

In accordance with the committee’s recommendations, the CM has taken action. The then Director of the Directorate of Teacher Education (Teachers’ Training & SCERT), Manoj Padhi, along with three Assistant Directors – Pralipta Mishra, Dilip Kumar Sahu, and Bharati Tudu – has been suspended. Similarly, disciplinary action has been initiated against six other Assistant Directors, the Office of the CM said in a post on X.

The committee was formed after over 1,500 errors were detected in textbooks prescribed for students of Classes I to VIII for the current academic session.

Teachers, parents, and Opposition parties later slammed the errors, saying it was highly unacceptable to find so many mistakes in school textbooks.

Following the controversy, Majhi instructed the committee to identify the officials and agencies responsible for the errors and submit its report within a week.

Among the major errors in the textbooks were referring to Sir Isaac Newton as a “great pilot” instead of a scientist, using an image of Karnataka’s Vidhan Soudha in place of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, and identifying Hampi’s famous stone chariot as the Konark Sun Temple.

Besides, distorted facts about Odisha’s geography, history, and cultural heritage were also widely discussed on the internet.

The Odisha Parents’ Federation blamed the state’s education system for the publication of the error-ridden textbooks.

Earth may have been seeding Venus with microbes for billions of years: study

A new study suggests asteroid impacts may have carried Earth’s microbes to Venus for billions of years, raising intriguing questions about the origin of extraterrestrial life.

What if the first signs of life discovered on another planet were actually… ours?

A new scientific study suggests that Earth may have been sending microscopic life to Venus for billions of years. According to researchers, powerful asteroid impacts could have blasted rocks carrying hardy microbes into space, with some eventually reaching Venus and surviving within its mysterious cloud layers. If future missions detect life there, scientists say one possibility is that it may have originated on Earth rather than on Venus itself.

According to a study presented at the 2026 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC), researchers from The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHUAPL) and Sandia National Laboratories explored whether microscopic organisms could survive the journey from Earth to Venus. Their findings were reported by Universe Today in an article written by Matthew Williams.

The research is based on the theory of panspermia, which proposes that life—or its basic building blocks—can spread between planets aboard asteroids, comets and other rocky debris. Scientists have previously explored this possibility between Earth and Mars. The latest study extends the idea to Venus, whose cloud layers have attracted growing scientific interest as a potential habitat for microbial life.

To estimate the possibility of life reaching Venus, researchers used the Venus Life Equation (VLE), a scientific framework developed in 2021. Similar in concept to the famous Drake Equation, the VLE combines several factors to estimate the likelihood of existing life by evaluating its origin, resilience and the continuity of habitable conditions.

The team first examined whether microscopic organisms could survive the violent process of being blasted off Earth’s surface during an asteroid impact, followed by prolonged exposure to the vacuum of space, radiation and extreme temperatures. Previous studies and meteorite analyses have suggested that organic material can withstand such harsh conditions, ScienceDaily reported.

Researchers then modelled how Earth-origin rocks, known as bolides, would behave after entering Venus’ dense atmosphere. Using a widely accepted atmospheric fragmentation model, they calculated whether fragments carrying microbes could remain suspended in the planet’s cloud layers rather than being destroyed during atmospheric entry.

According to the study, hundreds of billions of microscopic fragments may have reached Venus over geological timescales. The researchers’ preferred estimate suggests that around 100 viable microbial “cells” could be dispersed into Venus’ atmosphere every year. Over the past one billion years, as many as 20 billion such cells may have been transferred from Earth.

The researchers caution that considerable uncertainty remains in their calculations and acknowledge that several variables in the Venus Life Equation are still poorly understood. They also emphasise that the study does not prove life exists on Venus.

However, the findings provide a compelling explanation that scientists may need to consider if future missions discover microbial life in Venus’ atmosphere. Rather than evolving independently on Venus, that life could potentially be descendants of microscopic organisms that first evolved on Earth and later made an extraordinary interplanetary journey.

The study also highlights how planetary collisions may have played a far greater role in spreading life across the Solar System than previously imagined, opening new avenues for research into humanity’s oldest question: Are we truly alone?

Eight arrested in Ayodhya Ram Temple donation embezzlement case

Lucknow: Eight people have been arrested in connection with the alleged embezzlement of donations received at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, days after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) submitted its preliminary findings to the Uttar Pradesh government.

According to police, the accused were associated with the process of counting cash and valuables donated by devotees at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple. They were arrested in Ayodhya on Thursday night and are being questioned before being produced before a magistrate.

The case has been registered under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to theft by an employee, criminal breach of trust, dishonestly receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy.

Those arrested have been identified as Avinash Shukla, Anukalp Mishra, Lavkush Mishra, Manish Kumar Yadav, Karunesh Pandey, Ramashankar Mishra, Subhash Srivastava and Ramshankar Yadav, also known as Tinnu.

According to police, the accused were involved in different stages of the donation handling process. Tinnu Yadav, a former driver of the Trust’s general secretary Champat Rai, allegedly had access to donation box keys. Former bank employee Subhash Srivastava supervised the cash-counting staff, while Karunesh Pandey is accused of manipulating financial receipts. Other accused allegedly participated in counting donations or handling the misappropriated funds. Police said further investigation is underway.

The arrests came after the Uttar Pradesh government constituted an SIT on June 13 following a request from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which manages the temple. The SIT submitted its preliminary report to the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) on June 23. Officials have not disclosed the contents of the report, stating that it remains confidential.

Earlier this month, both the Uttar Pradesh government and the Trust had denied allegations of financial irregularities. Trust General Secretary Champat Rai had said that regular audits involving representatives of the Trust and the State Bank of India had not revealed any discrepancies.

Reacting to the arrests, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the government had acted immediately after receiving the SIT report. “We had said, ‘Do not worry about Ayodhya.’ As soon as the SIT report was released, action was initiated immediately. Playing with matters of faith is unacceptable,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the government would maintain a zero-tolerance approach towards anyone attempting to exploit public faith or misuse institutions associated with religious devotion.

He also criticised opposition parties over their comments on the issue, saying, “One side used to say that Lord Ram doesn’t even exist… Those who would fire bullets at the mere mention of Lord Ram’s name are now saying that there has been tampering with faith.”

Meanwhile, opposition leaders have termed the FIR an “eyewash”, alleging that it does not fix accountability on senior functionaries of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, including General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra. The Trust has continued to deny any wrongdoing.

Police said the investigation is continuing and further legal action will depend on the evidence gathered during the probe.

Venezuela earthquake death toll climbs to 235, rescue efforts intensify

Rescue teams are working along Venezuela’s northern coast after powerful twin earthquakes caused widespread destruction and flattened multiple buildings.

Venezuelans raced against time on Thursday to search for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings after a pair of powerful earthquakes devastated the country’s northern region, killing at least 235 people and injuring around 4,300 others. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise significantly as rescue operations continued across the affected areas and many people remained missing beneath the rubble.

The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, struck less than a minute apart late Wednesday, severely damaging infrastructure, including the Simón Bolívar International Airport near Caracas, according to theguardian.com.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Defence Department would support search and rescue operations in the affected region. He said the immediate priority was locating survivors trapped under debris. Rubio added that the next 72 hours were critical for rescue efforts, describing them as a “golden” window to save lives. He also noted that many people remained buried under collapsed structures.

The worst damage was reported in coastal areas near La Guaira, Catia La Mar, and Caraballeda, where several high-rise buildings collapsed. Entire families are reported missing in some locations. Officials declared La Guaira a disaster zone.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez described the situation as a major tragedy. She said dozens of buildings had collapsed in the hardest-hit region and confirmed that rescue operations were ongoing. She also urged businesses to provide heavy machinery to assist recovery efforts.

She said the hardest-hit area remained La Guaira, where extensive damage had been recorded and rescue operations were continuing with urgency.

In Caracas, significant damage was reported in neighbourhoods including Altamira and Los Palos Grandes, where several buildings also collapsed.

The UN humanitarian agency said more than 100 buildings had been destroyed in the La Guaira region alone. It confirmed that children and elderly people were among those missing.

UN relief chief Tom Fletcher said emergency teams were being rapidly deployed, adding that international support was being mobilised to assist search and rescue operations and help affected communities.

The tremors were felt as far away as Manaus in Brazil, more than 1,000 miles from Caracas, causing panic and evacuations.

Several countries, including Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Canada, and Qatar, have pledged humanitarian assistance. France said it would deploy 85 specialised rescuers to support emergency operations.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed concern over the situation, saying Venezuela had shown resilience in the face of repeated hardships.

US President Donald Trump said American agencies were prepared to respond quickly and assist in relief efforts. He said the United States stood ready to help Venezuela.

The US Treasury also announced a temporary waiver of certain sanctions until October 23 to allow earthquake-related relief transactions.
